These studiesfurther indicated that these rocks along the Wabash are a southernextension of the upper part of the Alpena limestone of Michigan. Between the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers in Calhoun County, 111.,a narrow strip of highland contrasts strongly with the lower countryto the east. A thin stratum of Devonian rocks is well exposed alongthe streams and blufifs in this interesting area. The upper part of thisstratum appears to be directly related to the upper Cedar Valleyformation of Iowa, but the lowest beds discovered in Calhoun Countycontain a fossil assemblage unknown elsewhere in this country. Southwest of the old and quaint village of Ste. Both of these formations contain 15 i6 SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION. SMITHSONIAN EXPLORATIONS, I936 17
