ENGRAVING UPON AQUAMARINE. A considerable number of both modern andancient engravings are executed upon this gem represented in Fig. 66 is a part of the. It was mounted ori-ginally with sapphires and pearls, and formed partof the decorations of a reliquary belonging to theabbey of St. Denis. I40 PRECIOUS STONES. ENGRAVING UPON THE EMERALD. The brittle texture of the emerald prevented itfrom being a favourite with engravers, consequentlythere are few engraved emeralds. There is a description of a beautiful compositionexecuted in the middle ages upon this stone. Itrepresented the soul led away by the pleasures. CYMOPHANE. The cymophane is formed like the emerald, ofalumina and glucina. The cymophane of modern mineralogists is theoriental chrysolite, the chrysopal, and the chryso-beryl of the lapidaries. It is remarkable for itslively brilliancy, its polish, similar to that of thesapphire, and its warm gay tint. But
