Atlantis 2 exploration ship that Robert Ballard used to explore the Titanic.

The Atlantis II was built in 1962 for the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts. In its 33-year career as a exploration ship, it sailed more than 1 million miles and spent more than 8,100 days at sea - the most of any research vessel in ship is most famous for its storage and launchings of the Alvin, a deep-diving three-person submarine. The Alvin made 12 trips to capture images of the Titanic in 1986, about a year after Robert Ballard discovered the location of the sunken liner in the Atlantic Ocean. The ship had a hangar and A-frame installed in 1983 to launch and recover the Alvin.
