With this arrangement, an exten-sive series of tests was carried out todetermine the effect of spin on dis-persion. It was found that a con-siderable decrease in dispersion wasobtained with very moderate spins, and that the speed was not critical—essentially the same improvement wasobtained over a wide range. With-out spin, the dispersion for the stand-ardized rocket was 39 mils: that is,the rocket would deviate 39 feet in1000 feet of travel, while with spinsof 800, 1,400 and 2,400 rpm thedispersion was reduced to 13, 11, and9 mils, respectively. The improvement in dispersion ob-tained in these and other tests re-sulted in intensive research programs both here and abroad to reduce dis-persions by giving the rock
