The running of the safetycars may be compared to the running of an auto-mobile in that there are more things to do than inthe ordinary electric car, but no severe physicaleffort is required. The doors and steps are air-operated and the hand-brake is only a standby. For handling cars on the Summit Avenue line theoperators are divided for four morning runs, fourevening runs and four split runs. The men are notrequired to work as many hours as regular motor-men and conductors, but they receive at least asmuch pay for their days work. On Jan. 15, 1917,after two and one-half months of operation, theoperators were told that if they wished they couldgo back to their old runs without prejudicing theirstanding. Not one man went back.
