An antique John Deere 830 farm tractor in a county fair parade

The John Deere model “830" was the last of a line of two cylinder, standard tread, diesel tractors that began with the model “R” in 1949. By the time the “R” had evolved into the “830" the horsepower had increased almost 50% with no loss of fuel efficiency and increased reliability. The 830 was not tested at Nebraska since it was essentially an updated 820. Results from Nebraska test No. 632, conducted in 1957 on an 820, reported HP at the belt, HP at the drawbar, and to horsepower hours per gallon of fuel. The test tractor had 15-34 rear and front tires, and was ballasted to a test weight of 11,995 pounds. It is interesting to note that during hours of operation no adjustments or repairs were made. The John Deere model 830 was produced beginning September 4, 1958 (serial number 8300000) until July 14, 1960 (serial number 8306891). Of this relatively short production run 3,584 were fitted with pony engine starting and 3,131 with 24 volt electric starting. There were 130 830's sent to Monterrey, Mexico and there were 46 serial numbers that were not used or scrapped at the factory. If my math is right, this indicates that John Deere sold only about 6,221 830's in the and Canada. To those that would comment that the 830 two cylinder design was hopelessly outdated even when new, J. R. Hobbs stated in The John Deere 30 Series; End of the Two Cylinder Era, “In terms of horsepower the 830s were within 5 or 6 horsepower of any of their competition, with a very flat and rising torque curve, which gave unsurpassed lugging power. In the areas of hydraulics, fuel economy and driver comfort, the 830 had no competition.” All of the 830's were produced as standard tread tractors with two specialty tractors offered, the “830 I” (industrial) and the “830 Rice Special”. There were only 118 (or 127 depending on the source) “830 I” tractors built and production of the “830 Rice Special” was well under 500 units (making both fairly rare).
