Depicted in this image is a detail from one of the corporal works of mercy: to bury the dead. Two garlanded mourners carry flowers. There are two main categories of Mercy in Svolinský’s stained glass window: corporal and spiritual. The corporal works of mercy are: to feed the hungry; to give water to the thirsty; to clothe the naked; to shelter the homeless; to visit the sick; to visit the imprisoned or ransom the captive; and to bury the dead. Spiritual works of mercy are: to instruct the ignorant; to counsel the doubtful; to admonish the sinners; to bear patiently those who wrong us; to forgive offences; to comfort the afflicted; and to pray for the living and the dead. Karel Svolinský (1896 - 1986) studied painting at the Prague Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design where he was taught by Max Švabinský (1873 - 1962). Svolinský became famous in the 1920s after illustrating a poem, ‘May’ by Karel Macha, and went on to establish a reputation with his designs for postage stamps, banknotes and theatre costume and scenery; he also worked with puppets and on templates for tapestries.
