Mr. Hassett retired at the end offive years, and was succeeded by CharlesEndicott, who remained three the retirement of Mr. Endicott,Mr. Chapman has been alone. Hisbusiness has steadily expanded. In 1872,the necessity for increased room havingbecome imperative, he erected at thesoutheast corner of Milwaukee and Wis-consin streets one of the largest and mosthandsomely appointed store-buildings in 82 INDUSTRIAL HISTORY OF MILWAUKEE. the West at that time, and removed fromhis old quarters. In 1883, his new storewas outgrown, and he built an additionnearly doubling its size. Not contentwith building for utility only, he calleddecorative art to the aid of architecture, structure, with its entire contents, wasdestroyed by fire. Milwaukeeans lookedupon the fire as a public calamity ratherthan a merely private loss. Business menasked the question, Will Mr. Chapmanrebuild ? with much concern, for they. and created an establishment that fitlycame to be spoken of as the PalaceStore, and was the wonder and the prideof the whole Northwest.
