Owing to the fact that he was poorlyprepared to enter that institution, he never took ahiffh standingf in his classes. He was graduated in1847 and ordered to Mexico. He took part in Scotts campaign from VeraCruz to the city of Mexico, and was twice brevetted for gallant conduct, atChurubusco and Chapultepec, finally attaining the rank of first lieutenant ofartillery. After the Mexican war he was on duty at Fort Hamilton, New Yorkharbor, and subsequently at Fort Meade, Fla., but in 1851 ill hea
