Basal leaves on long petioles: stipules narrow, acute, i' long or less; leaflets oblong, or some- what oblanceolate. obtuse, denticulate, g"-2' long; heads long-pcduncled, globose, I'-ii' thick; flowers purple or purplish, 6"-9" long, very short-pedicelled. the lower at length re- flexed ; glabrous, linear-subulate, the longer nearly equalling the tube; pod 2-6- seeded. Eastern South Dakota, probably introduced from farther west. Native from Montana to Cali- fornia.
