Mount Vesuvius volcano, Italy, Quickbird satellite image. The volcano lies close to the coast of the Bay of Naples, and the large city of Naples lies only a few kilometres to its west. The entire region around the volcano is densely populated and its flanks are heavily vegetated. Vesuvius is still an active volcano, however. Its last eruption was in March 1944, the longest quiet period since 1631. It is known for sudden and violent eruptions, however, and is closely monitored for signs of new activity. It is famous for its destruction of the Roman towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum in a massive eruption in 79AD. Photographed on 12th July 2002.
