Beryllium. Sample of beryllium (Be), an alkaline earth metal element from group 2 of the periodic table. At room temperature and pressure it forms a brittle grey metal that melts at 1287 degrees Celsius. Its alloys are used in nuclear reactors as reflectors and moderators. Beryllium and its compounds are toxic and can cause serious lung diseases and dermatitis in humans.
