‘I began a series of views of Vétheuil that I thought I could do quickly, and it took me all summer.’ When he returned to Vétheuil in the summer and autumn of 1901, Monet was revisiting a location he was completely familiar with. Moreover it was a place that was filled with memories: his first wife Camille is buried in this village. This time he rented a room in a farmer’s house on the banks of the Seine, and drove there from Giverny each afternoon, thanks to a recently acquired automobile. He painted canvases showing the village from a location on the opposite bank of the river at Lavacourt. Using a more or less square format, he gave prominence to the river which takes up over half the canvas. Yet once again it is not the depiction of a landscape that interests him, but his own individual interpretation of the subject. So the village became the pretext for investigating the play of light. He systematically studied the various changes in appearance caused by the light at different moments of the day. The morning mist blurs the contours of the church and houses, while the setting sun floods and fades out the architectural lines. As a result the buildings lose all their substance, as in his paintings of Rouen Cathedral and London: they have been dissolved by the light. The eye only manages to reconstruct them from the innumerable shimmering colours. Six of these views of Vétheuil were exhibited in the Durand-Ruel gallery in 1902.
