The Skittle Ground (Described in Smiths Catalogue, vol. IV, p. 29, n° 91, as follows) : « A view of an open common, intersected by paths, and boundedby rustic habitations. A little ale-house is on the right, in frontof which are assembled a number of artisans and others, toenjoy the usual rustic recreations of the country. Among themmay be observed a droll fellow, lolling on a form, and evidently - 54 -. saying something gallant to a young woman, sitting near him witha glass of liquor in herhand. Their conversation appears to arousea man, who with a pipe in his mouth, in seated near a tree, lean-ing forwards with his elbows on his knees to listen. Close to thelatter is a stout artisan, who seems by no means satisfied with thelandlords version of the reckoning, and is counting it over part} at a table, and a man chatting with a woman who has achild in her arms, are near the tree. In a second distance, on theopposite side, are four more playing at skittles, and a boy with abasket on his arm is looking on. Two dogs and some poultry areclose to the front.
