A steam train on the 1000mm narrow gauge Brocken railway from Wernigerode to the summit of the Brocken mountain, Germany

Built in 1954, this so called new steam engine was a very close copy of the standard locomotive built in the 1930's. 99 7243 pulls a passenger train up the 1 in 30 climb along the former East-West German border to the Brocken Peak, a height of 1125m, the highest of the Harz mountains. This 1000mm narrow gauge railway travels from Wernigerode to the top of the Brocken. The Peak of the Brocken was a military base which has only been open to the public for a relatively short time. Until reunification, the mountain was off limiys to all but the Soviet Army.
