At his sum-mons 13 independent volunteer companies, 11 ofinfantry and two of cavalry, at once fell into line. Ofthe infantry four companies were from Detroit, bear-ing the honored names of Montgomery, Lafayette,Scott and Brady upon their banners. Of the re-mainder Monroe tendered two, Lenawee County three,St. Clair, Berrien and Hillsdale each one, and WayneCounty an additional company. Of these alone theveteran Bradys were accepted and ordered into ser-vice. In addition to them ten companies, making theFirst Regiment of Michigan Volunteers, springingfrom various parts of tlie State, but embodying to agreat degree of which the first volunteerswas formed, were not called for until October follow-ing.
