Mitchell's Fold Bronze Age stone circle, Shropshire, England, looking S with Cwm Mawr prehistoric axe factory on Corndon Hill, Powys, Wales, rear L.

Mitchell's Fold stone circle, Shropshire, England, UK, looking S with Cwm Mawr prehistoric axe factory on Corndon Hill, Powys, rear L. Some 30 stones of dolerite once formed a rough circle or ellipse with two tall pillars flanking an impressive entrance at the SE where one portal stone remains (middle L). A central standing stone is said to be buried within the circle. Built in the Early Bronze Age around 2000BC, this & other circles, stones & cairns in the area were associated with the production of axe-hammers made from a very hard volcanic rock called picrite quarried on Corndon Hill & traded into central Wales & England. There are several burial cairns on Corndon Hill including one at the summit under the modern triangulation point. Historic ridge and furrow ploughing marks are visible in the turf. The circle stands at 1083ft (330m) OD on a high saddle of dry heathland with extensive views at the SW end of Stapeley Hill. In June 1994 the two tallest stones ( at SE & at NW) were deliberately pushed over: English Heritage investigated the exposed sockets & re-erected the stones.
