Cw 6124 The Generation of Possibilities, No 5 A Sculpture inspired by the electromagnetic experiments of William Sturgeon (1783-1850) which led to the development of the generator and motor sited on Altrincham Street in Manchester. The sculpture was created by Paul Frank Lewthwaite and was the winner of a national competition to mark the 175th anniversary of Umist in 1999. This is close up view of the ribs on one side of the sculpture. Umist is the University of Manchester. The information plaque for the sculpture is mounted on an adjacent brick arch of the railway viaduct that runs alongside Altrincham Street and carries the railway between Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Oxford Road stations.
