Skagway is a compact city in southeast Alaska, set along the popular cruise route the Inside Passage. It's home to gold-rush-era buildings, now preserved as part of the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park. The White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad runs vintage locomotives past the famously steep Chilkoot trail and offers sweeping mountain views during its climb toward is known as the “sunshine capital” of southeast Alaska, receiving just 27 inches of precipitation a year. The year-round population of Skagway is 920 residents, which more than doubles in the the gold rush, Skagway boasted a population of 12, was originally spelled “Skagua,” meaning windy place, but when the application to have a post office established was submitted, a Washington, bureaucrat thought the name was misspelled and changed it to “Skagway.”Skagway is also known as the “Gateway to the Klondike,” a reference to the famous Gold Rush to the Yukon of the late 19th was the first incorporated city of Alaska (June 28, 1900), beating Juneau by one Tlingit people have inhabited the area around modern Skagway for thousands of years. In the 1880s, after gold was discovered in Juneau and Sitka to the south, pioneers came into the area and established a trading post in nearby Dyea. When gold was discovered in Dawson City, Yukon, the rush was on and thousands of prospectors hurried north, most coming through the quickly built town that was named “Mooresville.” By 1898, Skagway was the biggest town in Alaska, with a population over 10,000. Today, thanks primarily to the National Park Service, downtown Skagway has been restored to its boomtown glory and is part of the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park. The park also maintains a site in Dyea, the beginning of the Chilkoot Trail, on which thousands of hopeful prospectors walked to the Yukon goldfields, carrying all belongings on their backs over snow-covered mountains.
