Two or three hundred yards from the house where John Shakespeare dwelt, in Stratford-on-Avon. Warwickshire, England, stood an ancient Elm boundary-tree. In the 16th Century, William Shakespeare could be found with his friends under the tree, where the parish priest, bailiff, churchwardens and schoolmaster would gather. Banners would wave, poles crowned with garlands would be carried by old and young and a passage from the Scriptures would be read and a psalm sung. Also known as "The Elme at the Dovehouse-Close end" until it was cut down, by order of the Corporation, on 11th November 1847.

On the road to Henley-in-Arden, about two or three hundred yards from the house where John Shakspere once dwelt, there stood an ancient Elm boundary-tree, which is recorded in the boundaries of the Borough of Stratford, Warwickshire, on the 7th of April, 1591, as "The Elme at the Dovehouse-Close end." Once venerable and noble sit was cut down, by order of the Corporation, on Thursday the 11th November 1847.
