Looking S down the spiral stone steps of Old Light, Lundy Island, Devon, UK, from just below the first full floor to the half floor & ground level. The lighthouse tower is 29m (96ft) high with 135 steps. Designed by Daniel Asher Alexander (architect of Dartmoor Prison) it was built by Joseph Nelson in 1819 for £36,000. First lit on 21 February 1820, it went out of use in 1897 because it was frequently masked by fog (it is 173m/567ft above sea level) & invisible to shipping. A fog-signal battery with 2 cannons was constructed in 1862, and then replacement lighthouses at the NW & SE ends of the island.
