Theshaft of the cross rises from a rectangularbase forming a flat band extending hori-zontally right across the slab and dividingthe panels on each side of the shaft fromthe one below the base. The cross isornamented with zoormorphic interlaced-work, but it is so much defaced that thepattern cannot be made out. The back-ground of the cross is arranged in fivepanels, containing (1) on the left side ofthe top arm of the cross, a winged andnimbed figure holding a book against thebreast, probably intended for one of the four Evangelists ; (2) on theright hand side of the top arm of the cross a similar figure to that. -Incised Cross at NorthTransept
