Roberta Flack playing her music at the 1973 Montreux Jazz festival
Roberta Flack was born in Asheville North Carolina on the 10th Feb 1939 and began picking up tunes on an old piano that her father repaired. After a series of teaching jobs she ended up in Washington at Mr Henry's on Capitol Hill where Les McCann fixed her up with an audition with Atlantic Records. From her repertoire of 600 songs she played 42 of them. Her first album 'First Take' was recorded including the song 'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face' which was released in June 69. She recalls 'I didn't realise how well the first record had done'. A year later she made her second album 'Chapter Two' and her third 'Quiet Fire' with the song 'Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow'. In the meantime 'The First Time Ever' went to no. 1 on the charts. A few weeks later Atlantic issued the new single 'Where Is The Love' made with Donny Hathaway which went tops for ten weeks. 'Killing Me Softly' was the next the title song having been No 1 pop and R & B in the country. She has continued recording and her latest (2005) 'Songs from The Neighbourhood' with its themesong 'What a Beautiful day In The Neigbourhood' is merely the latest. She continues recording and playing.
