St John Street, London, United Kingdom. Architect: Ben Adams Architects, 2013. Entrance detail.
This office refurbishment project in the heart of Clerkenwell entirely re-invents the tired front façade with the introduction of new, high thermal performance, floor to ceiling windows and a spraying of the existing beige metal panels black to maximise the building’s hidden potential. At ground floor, a new reception and a new fully glazed shop front improve connectivity to the street where once a mirrored glass and heavily mullioned front stood. At roof level a carefully considered black zinc clad extension sits, with full height glazing towards the East and West to maximise views of the urban landscape beyond. A slim panoramic window on the south elevation frames a view of St Paul’s Cathedral on the horizon, while minimising heat gain in the overall extension envelope and concealing views of unsightly low level roof plant on the adjacent building.
