Wallace's expedition notes. Notes and sketch for a hornbill bird (Buceros cassidix), observed by the British naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace (1823-1913) on his Malay Archipelago expedition. The notes were made at some point between 1855 and 1858, and the location is given as Macassar. This species is now known as Aceros cassidix, the Sulawesi red-knobbed hornbill. Wallace recorded the colours of the head (red, blue and black) and beak (orange), and its diet (fruit and insects).
