He passed through all thehardships incident to early days inUtah, and participated in the Echocanyon expedition in 1857. He acted asa Ward teacher for about twentyyears; was ordained a Seventy by Ly-sander Gee, Feb. 16, 1853, and joinedthe 17th quorum; was set apart as oneof the council of said quorum Nov. 1,J 874. April 20, 1876, he was ordaineda High Priest by Presiding Bishop Ed-ward Hunter, and set apart to act as^irst counselor to Bishop John HenrySmith, of the Seventeenth Ward, occu-pying that position until Nov. 6, 1880,when he was ordained and set aparthy Presiding Bishop Edward Hunter asBishop of that Ward. He was or-dained a Patriarch Sept. 13, 1896,- byPres. Wilford Woodruff, and was hon-orably released from his labors as aBishop. His wife died Oct. 23, 1890. In1893 he made a visit of a few monthsduration
