The image shows the christening and launching of the first wooden ship of the Ferris type on the Atlantic Coast. The ship, named "Coyote," was sponsored by Miss Phyllis Hughes, daughter of the late Senator Hughes of New Jersey. The ship had a gross tonnage of 3500, a length of 290', a beam of 46', and a draft of 17'. Two other similar ships can be seen under construction nearby. The average cost of this type of ship was $350,000 to $500,000. The photograph was taken on March 19, 1918, by Lieutenant deBerri.
