Brain blood vessels. Confocal light micrograph showing blood vessels in the brain. The smooth muscle in the blood vessels' walls has been stained green. Surrounding the blood vessels are glial cells (red), support cells for neurons (nerve cells). The red blood cells in the blood vessels distribute oxygen to the brain and carry waste carbon dioxide away from it.
