Built as a summer palace for the Inca royal Pachacuti, Machu Picchu is today a major tourist attraction and a World Heritage site. Visitors arrive by train which follows the Urubamba River to the town of Aguas Calientes and then ride a shuttle bus to the top of the steep mountain ridge to the site.
