The Battle of the Somme, July - November 1916 Battle of Albert. British Troops attacking German trenches near Mametz. Note shrapnel shell bursting. 1st July 1916. During the Battles of the Somme, the sector south of the Albert-Bapaume road, the British and French divisions found great success. Here the German defences were relatively weak, and the French artillery, which was superior in numbers and experience to the British, was highly effective. From Mametz to Montauban and the Somme River, all the first-day objectives were reached.
