Heleft Martinsburg with the first contingent forCamp Lee, Va., and began his military careeras a private. A short time later he was pro-moted to corporal. When a call was made forvolunteers to ga to France, Corporal Wolfordvolunteered and was sent overseas in charge ofcolored troops.
