Lasalle, Kalisch, and LilliLehmann, his wife, and Giulia Ravogli, alsoAlbani and Scalchi, were included in the com-pany, and during this season several Frenchoperas were given in French, Lakme, Mignon, etc., but Die Meistersingerwas also given in Italian. After a year of rest Abbey and Graugave grand opera in 1893-94, when EmmaCalve, Melba, Sigrid Arnoldson, and Plangon,also Gurin Dufriche and Vignas, were EMMA EAMES. Italian Opera. 219 Madame Melba acquired popularity almostequal to that of Patti in her best days, whileCalve created such a furore as Carmen thatit was difficult to make people believe thatshe could assume any other role. When sheappeared in later years as Ophelia in Ham-let, Marguerite in Faust, and as San-tuzza in Cavalleria Rusticana she brokethrough tradition and demonstrated, or ratherconfirmed, her position as one of the greatestoperatic artists who was ever in America. In 1895-96 Calve again came in the Abbeyand Grau company, and, in fact, the companywas much the same as in 1893-94. Troubles gathered around his head, andin 1896 the Abbey and Grau companycollapsed. There was nothing parsimonious about themanner in which Mr. Abbey did business,and it is said that at one time no less thantwenty-five hundred persons were upon thepay-roll of his company.
