Aldenham House Elstree seat of Vicary Gibbs Borehamwood, Hertfordshire circa 1880
Aldenham House, Elstree, just south of Aldenham village and west of Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, was the seat of Vicary Gibbs, a wealthy financier and avid plant collector who once amassed a larger collection of Chinese flora than the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew. Gibbs never married, and most of the plant collection was auctioned on his death in 1932, as were the house and gardens.[1] The site today accommodates the Hilfield Reservoir, the Lister Institute, the Haberdashers' Aske's Boys' School and Haberdashers' Aske's Girls' School. The frontage and grounds of Aldenham House were used to film a number episodes of several iconic 1960s series including The Avengers and The Saint.
