During his eight yearsof service he was seldom absent from his seat in theBoard and throughout proved a wise conservator ofthe best interests of the University. CHARLES JOSEPH WILLETT was born at Essex, New York, June 5, 1849, son ofJoseph S. and Cornelia .\. (Whallow) Willett, his first ancestor in this country,landed at Plymouth in 1630, and succeeded Miles. CHARLES JOSEPH WILLEIT Standish as Captain. Later he removed to LongIsland, and when Manhattan was turned over to theEnglish he became the first Mayor of New YorkCity. The subject of this sketch having preparedfor college at Essex Academy and the GrandRapids (Michigan) High School, entered the Uni-versity of Michigan, and was graduated Bachelor of 202 UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN Arts in 1S71. For one year after graduation hewas Superintendent of Schools at Chelsea, 1S72 to 1S76 he was employed in a bank atSt. Louis, Michigan. Meanwhile he had studiedlaw, and on January S, 1877, he was admitted topractise law in all the courts of the State. Novem-ber 9, 1S91, he was admitted to practise in the Su-preme Court of the United States, and October 16,1893, in the Supreme Court of California. Heserved on the School board of St. Louis and filledvarious other local oflices. He was ProsecutingAttorney for Gratiot County, 1880-18S2. In 1883he was
