He was born onErickstad farm, Lyngdals Irestegjeld, stiff, Norway, January 0, father was Ieter Nelson Erickstad, atainicr by occujiation. His mothers maidenname was Anna Sampson Aen, fi-om Vos,and a pious woman. His father was of strongcharacter, and a school teachei and leader inchuich work. He left a permanent impres-sion upon the character of his children, asshown by the work and iuHuence of Samuelin business and church alfairs. Thistraining was supplemented by a literarycourse at the Marshall Academy, Wisconsin,lie came to Minnesota and settled first on afarm at Newberg, Fillmore county. July 7,1872, he opened a general store at Lanesboro,where he still continues the business. Heprospered from the start. In 1882 he associ-ated with him his brother, Ieter A. Nelson,under the firm name of Xelson Bros., inwhich style the immense business is still car-ried on.
