He was Member of Parliament for the Falkirk Burghs,from 1841 to 1846; and was for some time Director andChairman of the Caledonian Railway Company; and a Director,and afterwards Deputy-Governor, of the Forth and ClydeCanal. He acquired, in 1853, the estate of Elie in Fife
