Supercomputer. Main processing units and a monitor of the Cosmology Machine, a massive supercomputer used to process astronomical data at the University of Durham, UK. It is built of 152 processors and can perform over 456 billion calculations per second. Scientists are using the machine to model the evolution of the Universe, from the Big Bang to the present day. It allows them to compare highly complex simulated universes with astronomical observations. A 3-dimensional model of local galaxies is seen on the monitor at lower right.
