Andrew McNally was a typical Chicago business man,shrewd, industrious, and progressive. For more thanforty-five years he had applied himself strictly to thedevelopment of the printing industry in the United Stateswith the result that he was one of the most successfulpublishers of his day. He was born in the north ofIreland in 1836. Early in life he was apprenticed as aprinter. From proof-boy he rose to a position embody-ing all the responsibilities of the trade. In 1858 helanded in New York, but soon left that city and jour-neyed
