Queen Square, Wolverhampton, 1939 - 1945. Queen Square during the years of the Second World War (1939-1945). To the left stands the statue of Prince Albert on horseback, erected to commemorate the visit of Queen Victoria to the town in 1866. Here, the statue is used as an advertisement for National Savings Certificates. Centre right is the building housing the present Barclays Bank (2007). Further to the right are the premises of Midland Bank Ltd. Other premises to the left include those of Copes Wine Lodge and Salmon & Gluckstein the tobacconists. Note the advertisement for Player's cigarettes and National War Bonds. Note also the electrified trolley bus and lack of directional signs (the signs were removed during the war years for security reasons). Behind stands one of the entrances to St. Peter's Collegiate Church in Lich Gates. Streets, Buildings, Banks, Photographs
