Pham Thi Huan, is 24 and half way through her second pregnancy. Her first child, Bui Van Xuan, is 20 months old. He can neither speak, nor stand up and he suffers from anoptalmia: he has no eyes. His father, Bui Van Tram, 28, is a veteran from the North Vietnamese army and was sprayed three times with Agent Orange. During the Vietnam War chemical defoliants were used by the US military to clear forests on a massive scale. Between 1962 and 1969, 11 million gallons of Agent Orange, the most commonly used defoliant, were dropped onto 16% of the total forested area of Vietnam. Extremely toxic Dioxin, contained in Agent Orange, has caused widespread cancer, heart disease and appalling birth defects. June 1980
