Abandoned homestead, Mojave Desert, the Californian High Desert, under a blue sky.

This photograph was created in an economically, geographically and socially marginal desert location in California, USA: Wonder Valley. Wonder Valley has been settled by homesteaders since the 1930s. Settlement patterns mirror the flux of the global economy which has resulted, over time, in an open desert landscape populated by mostly abandoned homes as settlers move on in search of better prospects. Those who remain tend to be overwhelmingly white, older, poorer, often living on assistance and dependant on food banks for survival. These empty houses slowly go to pieces over the decades, ravaged by the depredations of an unforgiving climate.
