Protein translation. Artwork showing the process of translation, the final stage of the production of proteins from the genetic code. Across top is a strand of mRNA (messenger ribonucleic acid) and its labelled nucleotides (adenine, cytosine, guanine, uracil). At lower left, the mRNA is being read by a ribosome (brown) which is assembling a protein (beaded thread). The amino acids (coloured spheres) making up the protein are being brought to the ribosome by units of tRNA (transfer RNA), which have amino acids added by an enzyme (aminoacyl tRNA synthetase, centre right). Another example of this enzyme is at upper left (purple).
