We havethe added pleasure of tak-ing our little ones to seethe sights that so de-lighted us in our own child-I hood, and that should bethe keenest pleasure of summer rarely passes without a successionof smaller shows in the open air, such as balloonascensions, bicycle races, cricket and base-ballmatches and so on. There is a resort knownas Cheltenham Beach, a strip of sand twelvemiles from the City Hall ,reached by the Illinois. i65 Central railway and known as **The ConeyIsland of the West, although it has nevertouched the real Coney Island in point of pros-perity. At Cheltenham Beach there is alwaysa show of some sort going on. It may be ath-letics. It may be a broad-sword combat be-tween mounted gladiators. It may be an as-cent by a parachute artist, a nervy gentlemanwho soars a thousand feet in the air in a balloonand then descends gracefully to the earth (at theimminent and exhilarating risk of his neck)under a parachute to which he clings by a thintrapeze bar. This is a hair-raising exhibitionfrequently seen and quite often ending in themaiming for life of the hardy serial Cheltenham Beach, however, everythinggoes, as it were, and nobody ever complainsunless it is on account of the small amount ofbeer doled out for the conventional nickel. Oc-casionally they have barbecues and clam-bakesat Cheltenham Beach, which, though at timesenjoyable, are not exactly the class of
