Necrotising fasciitis infection. Foot of a diabetic patient with necrotising fasciitis, a rare bacterial infection of the subcutaneous tissue. The infection progresses quickly, causing blistering of the skin and necrosis (death) of the subcutaneous tissue. Treatment is with surgery to remove infected tissue and antibiotics, although mortality rates are high. This patient died from severe sepsis (a whole body inflammatory response), caused by the infection. Diabetic patients are at greater risk of such infections as the disease can cause blood vessel damage, reducing blood flow to tissue.
