Geology and underground water resources of northern Louisiana . e of the Jackson a number of water sands have beendeveloped in different wells, but they show little regularity, andthe better wells have almost without exception been finished inthe main horizon. Pressure.—The outcrops of the Cockfield and correspondingundifferentiated Eocene water sands in Arkansas and Louisianaare all relatively low, and the water will generally not rise muchover 100 feet above sea level, except in elevated regions wherethe head is dependent on the local height of the ground-watertable. Flowing wells from this horizon will be obtained alongthe main stream channels in central Louisiana (PI. xli). InArkansas and northwestern Mississippi the artesian area is nearthe eastern side of the flood plain, where a relatively higher headis possible because of the greater average height of the Mississippihill lands. Water from these horizons will rise very near the 328 LA^ CrROt. SlI Report of Tqos, BULI,. 4. Pl, XLI. MAP OF COCKFIELD ARTESIANRESERVOIR IN NORTHERN LOUISIANABY. Quality.—In central Louisiana the water of this horizon isgenerally impotable except near the outcrop. West of Red River,as indicated by the Robinsons Ferry well (1120), water of goodquality may be expected much deeper in the embed. Indeed, itis believed that in the section west of Red River the quality ofthe deep water will generally be better in this horizon than in theunderlying Sabine. In southern Arkansas and northwestern Mississippi no impot-able water has been reported at this horizon in any wells exceptat Crossett, Ark. (6). As a rule the water from the basal layersis soft and more or less alkaline. At Empire (26)
