Apollo 11 Moon landing site and descent stage, illustration. Descent stage of NASA's Apollo 11 lunar module (LM-5 Eagle) at its landing site (Tranquility Base) on the Moon. This craft was used by US astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin to descend to the lunar surface on 20 July 1969. They became the first men to walk on the surface of the Moon, leaving the equipment shown here. Michael Collins stayed in lunar orbit in the command module Columbia. The Eagle comprised both a descent and an ascent stage. The ascent stage (not present here) was used to transport Armstrong and Aldrin back to Columbia, leaving the descent stage (shown here) on the Moon's surface, where it has remained ever since.
