Illustrations of a sagittal section through the right knee joint (left) and the tibia of the right knee joint seen from above (right) showing the C-shaped menisci. In the joint space between the femur and the tibia are the menisci and folds of fatty tissue covered with synovial membrane. The menisci are composed of fibrocartilage and are important in weight-bearing and minimize friction when the bone move. The cruciate ligaments (cut) are seen between the menisci. From Sobotta, J. (1904) Atlas der deskriptiven Anatomie des Menschen. Vol 1, Knochen, Bander, Gelenke, und Muskeln. J. F. Lehmann, Munchen (Figs. 222, 223).
