. The uncivilized races of men in all countries of the world; being a comprehensive account of their manners and customs, and of their physical, social, mental, moral and religious characteristics. By Rev. J. G. With new designs by Angas, Danby, Wolf, 1871. s, and that the highest rankis denoted by a symbolical badge. This badgeis conferred only by the sovereign himself, and the investiture with the Rupacks boneis conducted with a ceremonious solemnitythat denotes the estimation in which it isheld. So deeply are the Rupacks attachedto this symbol of their rank, that a rebelRupack, who had made war against theking, and was taken alive, resisted everyattempt to deprive him of his bracelet, anddid not part with it until he had sacrificedhis life in its defence. In shape the bonebears a curious resemblance to the openjaws of a skate, and is probably made onthat model. The mode of investiture is a very ceremo-nious one, and is illustrated on the followingpage. The Rupacks are assembled togetherin a sort of chapter of their order, and theRupack elect is seated at a little distancefrom them. The king, or a Rupack ap-pointed by him, then takes the bracelet, anddirects the candidate to throw a stone as faras he can. This is done in order to ascer-. (1.) INVESTITURE OF THE RUPACK.
