The return was slow and tedious, writesSergeant Cad well, the historian of 6th Connecticut, as we carried off allour wounded and gently laid out our dead, covering them as far as wecould with the blankets of the soldiers. The horrors of war were indeedsickening, as the rebels had every position in their favor and their fire wasvery destructive. Dead soldiers and horses lay in the woods as we passed;broken gun carriages lined the road, and blankets, haversacks and rifleslay around in large numbers. The centre section escaped the glory and the dangers of this engage-ment, and returned to camp rather crestfallen at not being allowed toparticipate in such an eventful skirmish. A few days later news came to the camp that Gen. Ormsby M. Mitchel,the Commander of the Department, had died of yellow fever after an illnessof only a few days. General
