Heentered upon the study of divinity atWittenberg in his seventeenth year, havingreceived careful religious training from hisparents, and a thorough grounding in the Latinand Greek languages from his teachers in theLeipzig Academy. At Wittenberg he addedHebrew to his acquirements, and with this equip-ment of scholarship, he became, in 1524, Rector ofthe High School at Magdeburg—an institutionwhich owed its origin to Gerard Groot, the Flemisheducationist, and in which, it will be remembered,Martin Luther was at one time a scholar.
